Churning out a mixture of Southern rock and boogie, 38 Special became a force in the 1980s music scene. Led by Donnie Van Zant and Don Barnes, 38 Special developed a sound that was halfway between country-fried blues-rock and driving, arena-ready hard rock. Landing hits that were both rockers and ballads, 38 Special quickly fell in with the likes of Skynyrd, the Outlaws and the Allman Brothers. Their 1979 album Rockin’ Into the Night generated a buzz and received some radio airplay, but the big hits came with 1981’s Wild-Eyed Southern Boys album and their follow-up recording, Special Forces. Look for 38 Special to perform all their hits, including “Rockin’ Into the Night,” “Hold On Loosely,” “Caught Up in You,” “Back Where You Belong” and “Second Chance.”
